Chiropractic is a complementary and integrative health that focuses on the body’s structure and how it functions. Most chiropractic methods focus on making adjustments or manipulations to the spine and other parts of the body to correct alignment problems that are causing pain, deterring function, and preventing the body’s natural ability to heal itself.

Who Can Benefit From Chiropractic Care?

While many people are familiar with chiropractors and may have even gotten treatment from one in the past, many people do not know that chiropractic can be used to treat people of all ages and physical conditions including infants, pregnant women, and older people.

Who Can Benefit From Chiropractic Care?

Although many people are familiar with chiropractors and the more typical ways they make adjustments, many people do not realize that there are over 200 different styles and methods that chiropractors can be trained in to treat patients with. These include methods that use more gentle adjustments than the “back cracking” adjustments that were initially most prevalent when the art of chiropractic began gaining popularity with the mainstream public in the United States in the 1980s. There are many different chiropractic treatments that may be able to rejuvenate your and your family’s health. An advantage to working with a chiropractor over a medical doctor is that while a chiropractor might suggest supplements or vitamins to improve your health, they do not prescribe pharmaceutical medications that can have negative side effects or painful and invasive surgeries. Some methods of chiropractic treatment include different tools that have been designed specifically for different kinds of chiropractic adjustments as opposed to adjustments that the chiropractor makes with their hand directly to the patient’s body.

Philosophy

Chiropractic work is generally categorized as complementary and alternative or as complementary and integrative. Chiropractic was originally developed by a man named D.D. Palmer whose son, B.J. Palmer, helped him to popularize chiropractic at the turn of the 19th century.

Chiropractic Care

Two basic philosophies of chiropractic are focused around the integrity of the spine and its surrounding tissues as a way to promote and enhance normal human function and health.

  1. The body (like nature) is constantly seeking a proper balance among its integrated systems.
  1. To have proper function, the body needs proper structure. When a structure of thebody is impaired by injury or stress, it will not function as well. This damaged structure is part of the body’s many integrated systems- and it can adversely affect other parts of the body even though it may not be apparent to the patient that they are connected.

An example of this is that when the spine is not positioned correctly, it can irritate the many nerves exiting the spine. When nerves are irritated, they do not function normally. This can cause problems with signals to other parts of the body as well as localized pain where they have affected tissues they interact with.

An important concept from D.D. Palmer that much of chiropractic philosophy still centers around is that the body has an innate intelligence- an inborn ability to self-regulate and maintain health.

Chiropractic treats the body as a whole and chiropractic can treat your whole family. Many people feel rejuvenated after chiropractic treatments because of the immediate effects of the initial treatment, as well as feeling improvement in the hours and days after the adjustment, as their bodies are allowed to realign themselves.
